When exploring this remarkable destination, you’ll discover a complex network of freshwater wetlands, lush forests, and twisting mangroves fed by waters from Lake Okeechobee. The park protects just twenty percent of this vast land, with the southernmost section particularly popular among visitors. During my visit, I was amazed by the abundance of creatures inhabiting these wild marshlands – from the elusive Florida Panther to ancient crocodiles, gentle manatees, colorful birds (an incredible 350 species!), and fascinating reptiles (50 species). The animals in this incredible National park often come surprisingly close to the boardwalks!

Miami ranks high among the best places in Florida, offering visitors a perfect glamorous retreat with its ideal weather and immaculate beaches. This vibrant island city in South Florida boasts a booming art and culture scene that rivals major global destinations. Connected to the mainland by several bridges, Miami provides easy access to various attractions.

South Beach is the place to be with its mix of interesting characters, superb restaurants, lively bars, and excellent shopping options. Walking through feels like stepping back in time, thanks to the stunning art deco architecture lining the streets. The bright turquoise water and iconic lifeguard towers painted in funky colors create perfect photo opportunities. I love spending afternoons on the incredibly soft sand, where you can relax under an umbrella while people-watching. Don’t miss Ocean Drive with its iconic Art Deco buildings illuminated by neon lights after dark, creating a buzzing nightlife scene where vintage cars cruise the strip. When you need a break from the hot sun, try shopping along Collins Ave or wandering through Espanola Way, a charming historic street with the buzz of a historic Spanish village. If your time is limited, you can still take a day trip to the Everglades to experience this vast tropical national park.

Bordering states like Alabama and Georgia, this area comprises significant cities such as Tallahassee and Pensacola, with charming small towns dotting the land between. During my visit, I was captivated by the incredible sunshine, exciting adventures on the water, delightful food, and warm southern hospitality that make this region so unique.

The Turtle Hospital is an absolute must when visiting the Florida Keys! As you pass through Key Largo and reach Marathon, you’ll find the home of this incredible Turtle Sanctuary that’s changing lives. The fascinating 90-minute tour lets you see the incredible rescue and rehabilitation work behind the scenes – truly one of the most memorable experiences during my Florida road trip.

5. Cape Canaveral, Florida

Cape Canaveral, Florida, sits along the stunning Space Coast and is best known as the home of America’s spaceport, officially called Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS). Located just east of Orlando and forming part of the beautiful Barrier Islands that run along the Coast of the Atlantic Ocean, this area offers unique experiences for space enthusiasts and beach lovers alike.

Only a 1-hour drive from Daytona Beach, 2 hours 20 minutes from historic St. Augustine, and 3 hours 25 minutes to vibrant Miami Beach, Cape Canaveral makes a great stop on any Florida Road Trip. The Kennedy Space Centre is an absolute must where you can launch into space exploration and learn about famous space pioneers and fascinating future space missions. If you time your visit right, you might even witness a thrilling Rocket Launch into space! I recommend booking tickets online for this popular attraction to save time during your visit. After you’ve explored infinity and beyond, numerous other activities await – thrill-seeking adventurers can enjoy surf lessons or rent bikes and boats, while those seeking relaxation can enjoy 72 miles of serene beach for some well-deserved ‘R&R’ with Jetty Park being the perfect spot to unwind.

Orlando, Florida, is a family favourite destination full of excitement and adventure! Its perfect combination of sunshine, warm temperatures, and Floridian beauty makes it a great place to start or end your road trip through the Sunshine State. During my numerous visits, I’ve spent countless days exploring the city’s different resorts and theme parks.

The entertainment options seem endless, with Walt Disney World, Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando, and LEGOLAND Florida all competing for your attention. It’s not just about roller coasters and rides, though – there are tonnes of attractions for people of all ages to enjoy. Consider taking an airboat tour through the Everglades to appreciate local wildlife, or visit the Kennedy Space Centre to meet astronauts and possibly see a rocket launch! According to a local I befriended, travelers should head to the Old Spanish Sugar Mill for delicious pancakes before hitting the beach or enjoying the natural springs at Wekiwa Springs State Park. To get up close with the reptile residents of Orlando, you might visit Gatorland with its 110 acres of gator-filled swamp, or drive just outside to Lake Jesup, home to the largest alligator population in North America, where you can take guided airboat tours.

The food scene offers unique experiences – from Butterbeer to Krusty Burger, whimsical recipes from our favorite TV shows and films are brought to life! You can visit the Leaky Cauldron for authentic British pub grub, cool down at Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour with its incredible flavours, or satisfy your sweet tooth with gourmet cotton candy at Honk Honkers. This Dr. Seuss favorite delights visitors of all ages.

When you visit Sanibel and Captiva Islands, you’ll discover a little piece of paradise unlike anywhere else in Florida. With 15 miles of beautiful unspoiled beaches and winding roads lined with tangles of mangrove trees, the island’s beauty will surround you at every turn.

Stretching out into the Gulf of Mexico in Southwest Florida, these islands are connected to the mainland by the Sanibel Causeway, where you’ll pay a toll of $6 to enter this exclusive haven. It’s a gorgeous place to stop during your Florida Road Trip – a perfect slice of paradise for any beach lover. The islands boast 25 miles of scenic bike paths waiting to be explored and pristine beaches where you can collect shells and enjoy the warm water. I highly recommend catching a sunset here – add it to your to-do list and head to the west side of the island to catch the mesmerizing orange glow of a Florida sunset. For places to eat, the Island Cow is an all-time favorite that’s family-friendly, with excellent food and a great atmosphere. The Bubble Room might also catch your eye – it’s hard to miss with its colorful pastel exterior and charming year-round ‘Merry Christmas’ sign welcoming visitors.

Clearwater, Sarasota, Naples, Fort Myers Beach, and Sanibel Island rank among my favorite places to stop on any Florida Road Trip! These incredible beaches regularly rank among the top beaches in America for good reason. Visitors can relax on a beautiful beach, where the sun beams down, and occasionally spot playful dolphins playing in the warm waters. The Coast offers brilliant beach combing, excellent resorts, and scenic cruises – a great way to experience Florida at its finest. Among the Best Beaches, Siesta Key Beach remains wonderfully tranquil and relaxing. At the same time, Madeira Beach provides more energetic vibes where you might get lucky enough to spot a dolphin or gentle Manatee. Clearwater is often named the “Best Beach,” with lots to do between swimming in the crystal clear waters and resting on fine white sands. A Fun Floridian Fact – Early adventurers to Florida claimed to have seen Mermaids, but they encountered the region’s gorgeous Manatees!
